THE BEAUTY & DANGER OF SIREN

Tara Moss delivers a world of beauty and danger, of French cabaret and terrible revenge in her 5th literary installment, Siren.

Famous for her hands on research, Tara was set on fire by Hollywood stunt company West EFX, choked unconscious by Ultimate Fighter 'Big' John McCarthy, and earned her PI licence for this latest novel.

Best of all, Mak is back.

Mak Vanderwall - beautiful, street-wise daughter of a cop, graduate in forensic psychology, and now PI - is hired by a widowed mother to track down her missing nineteen-year-old son. Has he come to harm? Or has he run off with a bizarre troupe of shady French cabaret artists sweeping through Australia? Has the dark beauty of the burlesque, the magic, the mind-bending contortion, beguiled him? Or has he been seduced by the mysterious and amoral older woman who has a terrifying starring role in the troupe's modern performances of the Grand Guignol 'Theatre of Fear', famous in Paris in the early 1900s? And what of the rumours of violence and tragedy that have plagued the troupe for the past decade? Is their horrifying past fact or fiction?

Meanwhile, Mak is increasingly obsessed with the powerful Cavanagh family, one of Australia's richest and most ruthless families, whom she believes has got away with murder. And it seems their security advisor Mr White, and his hit man, Luther Hand, may not have forgotten about Mak either ...

Tara will be on tour throughout Australia in September, catch her in the closest captial city near you!

Pre order Siren now. After all, who can resist a good thriller series that began with a stiletto murderer?

WANT TO BE A NATIVE NEW YORKER?

Fancy an evening coctail @ the rooftop bar (pictured) of the Gansevoort Hotel, complete with 360 degree views of New York City & the Hudson River?

Perhaps dinner at the tremendously chic Pastis, made famous for its frequent appearances in Sex in The City? Private shopping experiences at Sale prices?

Design legend Daniel Lightfoot & style aficionado Margo Bowers will wisk you away on the trip of a lifetime, the Native New Yorker Tour.

A few short blocks away from Times Square exists a city beyond your wildest imagination. A place of underpriced designer fashions and overpriced cup cakes. Where bars and lounges can resemble Marie Antoinette's apartment or your grandparents living room in the 70's but equally represent the essence of chic.

Daniel & Margo will take you on to the New York tourist rarely experience. From Freemans, a hidden culinary gem in the grungy East side, to the fashionable Bar American in midtown, to the Blue Note Jazz venue in the fashionable West Village.

Discover New York City away from the tourist trail where locals dine, shop & party.

And for one brief shining moment - you are a New Yorker!

Not busy this November? For more details contact Debra Grandidier @ Flight Centre Management on 1300 557 813.

RUNNING IN HEELS

Israeli women competed in the 'Race on Heels' for the first time near the beach in Tel Aviv on July 16, 2009.

The competition came to Israel after being held in Amsterdam, New York and Berlin. During the race all women are asked to sprint in heels above 7 centimetres on a 50-metre track.

First one to the end without an injury wins...

I love my heels but... Pass!

TEARS @ LACROIX

As Christian Lacroix’s Spring / Summer 2009 hits the catwalk in Paris, there is glumness in the air. This could very well be the final curtain for Lacroix.

France's US-owned couture house declared insolvency at the end of May 2009 after the company claimed it had fallen foul of the global crisis.

Arguably one of the most exuberant couturiers in Paris, not only will we miss his ostentatious haute couture & ready to wear collections, but oh, the shoes…

Like many luxury goods businesses, the Lacroix fashion house has been severely affected by the recession, losing 10 million euros in 2008 on turnover of 30 million euros.

Christian Lacroix is considered one of the Frances's most creative contemporary designers.

COCO AVANTE CHANEL

This biopic film tells the story of the architect behind the world's most famous fashion house, depicting the course she travelled from humble seamstress to global style mogul.

The Babes in Business screening tonight was packed with VIP treatment. Fabulous bubbles on arrival and an exclusive screening of Coco Avant Chanel @ DENDY Portside followed by wines and canapés at the gastronomicly delightful Gusto Da Gianni.

With a cinema full of Babes inspired by the incredible Gabrielle Coco Chanel, who taught women across the world that "a girl should be two things: classy and fabulous", it was definitely a winner!

THE SATORIALIST IN EUROPE

World famous fashion photog blogger Scott Schuman is in Europe for the Men's Fashion shows in Milan & Paris.

In between shows Schuman will post street images from Florence, Milan, Berlin, Paris, Venice.

The Sartorialist began as a means to share photos of people that Schuman saw on the streets of New York that he thought looked great.

"When I worked in the fashion industry (15 years), I always felt that there was a disconnect between what I was selling in the showroom and what I was seeing real people (really cool people) wearing in real life".

For some great examples of street style, keep up with The Satorialist in Europe.

NO JIMMY CHOO SUBURBS IN BRISBANE?

Former ABC journalist & web creator Verica Jokic of Cityhobo.com has taken the unique approach of comparing suburbs in Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne to shoes.

Having moved around a lot Jokic says she always found it a challenge selecting a suburb to live in.

24 suburbs are listed in Brisbane to date & thus far Jokic has not identified a Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo suburb. Sadly, we only reach the heights of designer slippers, Country Road & Bally.

Clearly Jokic has not met any of the women I know & before you ask, yes, they all live in a suburb cluster. The likes of Maryons, Jean Brown, Louis Vuitton, Gary Castles & DJ's designer shoe department don't merely sell great lashings of shoes to out-of-towners!

While she does lament she is not done & still has plenty of research in front of her, this shoe devotee does hope this is not yet another example of our southern counterparts portraying Brisbane as Hicksville.

Only momentarily. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane Festival Director Lindsay Bennett was delighted to reveal Kristy has accepted an invitation from MBFF’s major sponsor Mirtna Capital to attend the Festival as their VIP guest.

WELL HEELED IN LAMBORGHINI

For those who cut a rapid pace when strutting in stilettos these Lamborghini concept heels are perfection.

When you consider Lamborghini, you think sleek styling and fast moving sports cars, but only the heel devotee will be able to get anywhere fast in these numbers.

The carbon-fiber heeled stilettos are based on the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera and while they are merely conceptual, I can think of plenty that would be lining up for them should they materialize.

ATTACK OF THE GLAMOURZON

Wearers take heed this season’s heels are tall, skyscraper tall, and as a consequence are heaving a number of unusual circumstances our way.

Innumerable design houses have peaked at fifteen centimeters while others are still climbing, and although some fashion mafia have embargoed this season’s must-haves, a number of us
(and yes, I am including myself in the midst of the insane) are braving the movement with tenacious enchantment.

Yves Saint Laurent’s latest contributions not only exhibit a house brick magnitude platform base, they are exclamation marked by a fifteen centimeter heel resembling a knitting needle. Simply put, you have to be unreservedly abstemious to sample these treasures and you sure as heck better have the most physically commanding ankles in existence. Blustering down the street in these will undoubtedly exhibit saucy but Naomi Campbelling it in public would be catastrophic.

The collateral damage doesn’t stop at the average folk; several veteran models created their own natural disasters at recent Fashion Weeks in altitude defying heels with numerous tumbles taken throughout runway shows resembling Bambi’s first steps, no doubt a combination of impossible heels and a highly polished runway.

Risk of fractured and sprained body parts aside, there is a secondary but equally disastrous impasse manifesting. A social quandary, if you will.

Not all women donning these specimens are diminutive, many are of average stature and some were tall at the outset. Accordingly, women are getting taller with the help of these outrageous stilts and the societal fallout is riotous. Despite the fact the majority of men aren’t psychologically scarred by having to speak into a woman’s cleavage, it doesn’t (if truth be told), illustrate him in the best light.

This spectacle is apparent at most bars, clubs and restaurants across the globe. At a recent opening of a high-end boutique, accompanied by a colleague who is not particularly robust in stature, we are greeted at the entrance by a group of girlfriends, all looking Très Chic in their opaques and gargantuan stilettos. It took an exclamation from my colleague regarding her verbal communication into my breasts for the entire evening to realize that we looked like a scene from Attack of the Über Blondes.

For gents who surpass six feet this is by and large not going to be a cause of great anxiety, but for those a little under-tall this is not tremendous news. Aside from the predictable short man's syndrome that can potentially be triggered, bending down to talk to someone that isn’t five years old is slightly uncomfortable, both orthopedically and socially. A conundrum that can be a little precarious for a gal on the dating circuit, being an entire head height above a person of interest isn’t exactly a lubricant for witty banter, pending the sense of humour of the conversation counterpart.

It begs the query, if the woman in question is not wearing sky-high stilettos and is simply the same height shoeless as the potential suitor, does he meet her criteria? Universally the majority of women have a set of guidelines covering both attitude and physical appearance that are deal breakers; frighteningly we are often encouraged to write this list down. Strangely enough, a short man is unlikely to make the shortlist.

So where does this leave the men? Do men under six feet tall just sit this season on the bench waiting this one out for the opportunity to have a tête-à-tête with a less elevated female? Or do some parts of The List get waivered for a great guy we just can’t wear Louis Vuitton’s current tribal platforms in the company of?

At the risk of clogging up my Inbox with disgruntled gents articulating opinions on the subject, I put to all women that this is a significant dilemma. If you are one of the fashion faithful that have decided to invest the value of an overseas jaunt into a selection of fifteen centimeter designer heels, are you going to chose not to wear them to that hot party Friday night because your man of the moment is undersized in comparison? I think not.

Does he rise above this issue and become tolerant with his partner being modestly taller for the evening or does he get emotional over the subject? Clearly Tom Cruise had immense issues with Nicole Kidman wearing heels in his presence. The new Alexander McQueen’s would have him jovially posing for the camera alongside her belly button.

Could this season’s heels propagate short man’s syndrome in the average heighted bloke?

Is the best cause of action to suck it up, deal with it and let the wave of time wither the trend of the skyscraper heel with customary succession?

An intelligent man would endorse the advantages this heel can generate to his benefit. Most women sliding into a stiletto of this magnitude report significantly increased feelings of power, confidence and sex appeal. How can that be a bad thing?

Dismissing any groundless thoughts of inadequacy and utilizing her augmented self confidence can only be a good thing. Surely it is all about how you look at the problem at hand? Is she feeling strong, powerful and sexy? Yes. Are her feet going to be killing her when she gets home and will she remove them post-haste? Yes. Will her euphoric state remain and can he make use of it? Only if he is smart.

The reality is these heels, like all trends, won’t last forever. Take it one step further and buy her some sensational lingerie AND a new pair of stilettos to really embrace the moment, if you dare…

It’s all about how you look at the problem at hand. Maybe you’ll encourage her to wear them next season as well?

PROJECT GRBAC

Perennially chic Juli Grbac of Project Runway fame was already renowned in her home town of Brisbane for timeless elegant pieces in fluid fabrics with a girly innocence, but last night Grbac showed the world’s media what we already knew.

Making her RAFW debut to a massive crowd @ The Cargo Theatre, the Collection was a stunning illustration of her trademark pretty dresses, flowing gowns & an abundance of pleats and drapery.

A refreshing injection of more tailored pieces, not yet seen from Grbac, included this season’s strong shoulder lines in beautiful silk, heavily embellished jackets.

A stellar inauguration to Australia’s top fashion week.

COOPER NOT MISUNDERSTOOD - HE ROCKED!

Day 1 @ RAFW wasn’t for the faint hearted. Only those with stamina & feet of steel were able to see this one out!

Despite the painful one hour wait, Wayne Cooper’s show was definitely worth it. With its Rock & roll theme the Collection was inspired by strong women like Jerry Hall & Deborah Harry.

Boobs, legs, slicked hair & reds lips – very sexy stuff. With an action packed front row including; girlfriend Heidi Houghting, Peter O’Brien, Miranda & Gracie Otto, Kerri-Anne Kennerly, Sarah Murdoch, Alex Perry & Jonathan Pease, Cooper’s show lead with the tune ‘ Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’ & had all the ingredients for success, including the presence ex-partner Sarah Marsh & their children Ruby & Jude. Class act guys, it’s all about the kids.

Wayne has definitely claimed back his crown.

KILLEEN WIGS OUT

It seems Gretel Killeen is still reluctant to show off her new crop to the public, even when appearing on last night’s Rove. Killeen sported a brunette wig masquerading her new look, adding further to speculation that it won’t be revealed until she emerges for her first-time hosting gig @ the Logies.

Could this wig be one of Haddad’s collection…?

SHOE PRAISE IS GOLD!

An ice-breaker, the opener, or a pickup line, regardless of the terminology used the introductory line has always been a source of mystery and intrigue. Love them or hate them, it is guaranteed you have uttered or heard them!

Those who have delivered a line with a shoe observation will know, it is undoubtedly a surefire way to get a woman’s attention and if executed with charismatic poise, it’s powerful stuff.

Having been on the receiving end of some pickup tsunamis, I am wondering if the shoe opener is given equitable gravity by the male population.

“Those shoes look so good, they’re about to turn up missing”. What kind of man says something like that? I wasn’t sure if he was about to roll me for them or if he was suggesting I let him try them on? Quite clearly, this sounded far better in his head than it did when it was verbalized.

Women will find a strong, confident (clearly heterosexual) man who can open with the line ‘love the Louboutins’, significantly impressive. While the glossy red sole is typically a dead giveaway, it takes a skilled eye to decipher a Louboutin from its mimics. Even if he gets it wrong, he’s made the effort, the shoe bond is made and the suitor is instantaneously at the forefront of his competitors.

Do men not understand that a woman will dress from the feet up without a second thought and be so delighted with their outfit of choice that it can dictate how the entire evening will materialize? How a woman feels when she dresses and the type of evening she plans on having can from time to time, be illustrated by her shoe of choice. The average girl is not going to slide on a pair of red satin stilettos to go home early, solo.

Men of the world listen up, a woman’s shoe can tell you far more than you give it credit for. If her shoe de jour isn’t a result of her emotions, it most certainly can guide them.

To verify this declaration take a woman wearing flats, pop her into a pair of sassy strappy sandals and watch that walk become a strut before your very eyes. If she’s wearing ballet flats to meet you for drinks, she’s telling you she is comfortable, girly and cute. If she turns up wearing a slick pair of patent platform peeps that dwarf most of whom are six feet tall, she seeking calculated domination and most certainly means business.

So we are clear this doesn’t apply to all women, just shoe gals. It takes a shoe enthusiast to understand the power of the Choo. If you are dealing with a shoe gal the number one rule to live by is; compliment the shoes, even if you don’t know your Hush Puppies from your Manolos, shoe praise will always be well received.

In the name of research, I embark on an excursion to a local hip bar. Popping on a delectable pair of patent platform Jimmy Choos a grey knit dress and a trench, I head off to the crowded establishment. Not wanting to make it too easy for them, my selection is a beige and black patent sandal. My shoes say groomed and confident with a dash of sexy.

I am with a girlfriend so I am not flying solo on this mission, which means to make an approach can be more treacherous, but I am determined to deploy the strong from the weak.

First cab off the rank is a slightly graying forty-five year old gent who announces, within the first two minutes I might add, that he has more money than God. When I question where he had the occasion to glance at God’s P&L, he gives me a look that accuses me of having a smart mouth, surveys the length of my body and says, ‘hot shoes’. In an attempt to reconcile his financial broadcast, I contemplate whether or not he has decided I like nice shoes and quite clearly am out seeking someone to buy them for me? In a gesture of peace, I offer to buy him a drink in our next round and am met with a venomous ‘Jeez, a woman with shoes like that, that wants to buy a drink for a bloke… that’s a first’. Handing him another Corona, we politely disembark from angry man and abscond to seek a more secure conversationalist.

The second contestant is groovy guy. A well put together guy in his mid thirties who opens with ‘So you’re obviously not from here’. Puzzled at his erroneous observation, I enquire as to why he would make such a précis? ‘Women who live here just don’t dress like that’, he tells me. Clearly, he’s never met any of my friends.

Moving on to a new corner of the bar we are approached by Mr Smooth. Mr Smooth is thirty-one, attractive and fit, in a not-too-over-the-top way. One beam from his immaculately whitened teeth and it’s clear he is well rehearsed in such circumstances. He opens with, ‘You’re killing me with those shoes.’

Impressive. Really impressive. I envisage that countless women have been awed by Mr Smooth and I imagine that I am but another impending conquest. I would have been far more impressed had an associate attempting to get some wing-man action not informed me a mere five minutes earlier that Mr Smooth was getting married next Friday. See, what wing-man desires is the knowledge that Mr Smooth already has. The shoe compliment is gold.

So as not to confuse things it is important to note that there is such a thing as going too far with the shoe compliment and transitioning to creepy. Any peculiar admission about a foot fetish you may have is really, well, disturbing. Most women don’t want to know, under any circumstance, what you would do to her feet should she not be standing in the bar she is currently standing in. This is not smooth; it is disconcerting and is more likely to have a woman reaching into her handbag for a can of mace than it is her business card.

I have had the unfortunate occasion to appreciate what happens when foot fetishist meets shoe addict and it is all kinds of wrong!

As a treat, I am intermittently contacted by men who have read my columns and gleefully bound onto my website to further their research. Once on and faced with the gift of my email address, an insatiable desire to correspond and tell me all their dirty little foot fetish secrets apparently overwhelms them.

On the tame end of the spectrum was the thirty-nine year old man who read my column in Melbourne and emailed me to ask if I could send him a picture of my own foot in the pair of strappy gold bejeweled Jimmy Choos I was referring to herewith. To validate his request, he attached the scanned hardcopy version of the column in the publication, presumably in the event I forgot which specimens I was referring to?

Higher on the Richter scale was the twenty-five year old male who posted me a ten page diatribe outlining his shoe and foot loves, why he loves them and how he loves them… And yes, in this instance, ‘how’ is being used as a noun.

Not smooth. Not sexy. Just plain creepy.

A well executed shoe remark should have a touch of sexy or a dollop of humour. Don’t attempt to get too witty and distort the delivery, because what sounded first-rate internally may not come out as you anticipated and your good intentions may get lost in translation. There is a fine line between a woman throwing her head back with laughter and a woman tilting her head back to look for security.

Having scanned numerous male chat rooms and forums on the topic I can unquestionably advise not to carry out your research here. It is in these places I discovered such gems as; ‘Nice shoes, wanna screw?’ And ‘Nice shoes, but they’d look better on my floor’. Your buddies may find these comical but there is every chance serving this up to any self respecting woman may get you slapped!

The best place for you to pursue a line of investigation is with your female friends. Ask them for their thoughts and go from there. I can tell you emphatically that the shoe accolade is worth its weight in gold.

So Gentlemen, if you haven’t tried it give it a shot, what do you have to lose?
